Scorpio; Scorpion charms and jewellery - Annika Rutlin

In the natural world Scorpions are the most amazing creatures... they were around before the first dinosaurs, dance before they mate and glow in UV light (A scorpion's cuticle, or skin, absorbs ultraviolet light and reflects it as visible light).

Sounds like quite the party animal to me (ok, party arachnid).

And those born under this star sign are generally quite remarkable creatures too!

The most passionate sign of all, Scorpions are either full in or out of it, there's no in-between. They stand by their beliefs, and they don't crave anyone else's approval,  committing fully heartedly, with mind, body and soul... perhaps sometimes even a tad too intense for other mere mortals, especially if that sting comes in to play.

Scorpio, in Greek Mythology, comes from the story of Orion. This giant of a man was the son of Poseidon and Euryale (said to be the most handsome man alive). He and Artemis were hunting partners. Being such a great hunter Orion had boasted that he could kill any animal on Earth. This angered Gaia (Earth) and she sent Scorpius, a giant scorpion to kill him. The two fought and both were killed in the struggle, but from their ashes, rose the constellations Scorpius and Orion (said to be why Orion sets as Scorpius rises in the sky).

This zodiac sign is also therefore associated with death and rebirth, which makes sense when you consider that its ruling planet is Pluto (the Roman god of the underworld).

Scorpion is a pretty big constellation. Scorpius contains several bright stars, including Antares, one of the brightest stars in the night sky. It also contains the stinger of its namesake: the bright star Acrab, which marks the scorpion's head.

Although astrologers still refer to this constellation by its old name, Scorpio, the modern constellations is called Scorpius. The Sun passes through it each year for around a week in late November.

The eighth astrological sign in the zodiac, belonging to those born between the dates of 23rd October and 21st November.
